Meteorological Monitoring Stations for Power Infrastructure: Safeguarding Transmission Line Corridors

Designed for installation on power pylons, these meteorological monitoring stations collect data on wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and rainfall. This information is transmitted to a monitoring center via GPRS or fiber optics, with alerts pushed directly to the mobile devices of management personnel—thereby mitigating the risk of damage to transmission lines caused by extreme weather.

Developed specifically for monitoring localized weather conditions along transmission line corridors, these stations can be positioned on power pylons according to project-specific requirements. The system captures six key meteorological parameters in real time: wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and precipitation. Data is transmitted remotely to a monitoring center for real-time analysis. In the event of abnormal weather, early-warning alerts are sent directly to designated personnel, enabling operations and maintenance teams to address potential hazards promptly.

In my country, overhead transmission lines are typically located in open, outdoor environments, leaving them constantly exposed to natural elements—including high winds, heavy rainfall, and ice or snow. Such conditions can easily trigger short circuits or line trips; in severe cases, they may even cause pylons to collapse, disrupting the stability of the power grid and affecting the electricity supply for regional users. Consequently, power authorities have increasingly prioritized the safety management of transmission lines, making meteorological monitoring equipment an essential component of line operations and maintenance.

These monitoring stations feature an ultrasonic sensor integrated into a concealed top-cover design, which minimizes measurement interference caused by the accumulation of rain or snow, as well as the obstruction of natural airflow. By emitting continuous, frequency-modulated ultrasonic signals and measuring relative phase shifts, the system determines wind speed and direction. It operates without a "starting threshold" (minimum wind speed requirement), ensuring stable measurements even in low-wind conditions. The hardware is equipped with a "watchdog" circuit and an automatic reset mechanism, offering robust anti-interference capabilities. This ensures long-term, stable operation within the complex electromagnetic environments often found in the field, providing a continuous and reliable stream of meteorological data for transmission line corridors.
