During poor visibility conditions, ports are often forced to implement traffic control, resulting in significant vessel congestion and reduced shipping efficiency. Traditional manual visibility observation has problems such as strong subjectivity, limited observation frequency, and inaccurate estimation, which cannot meet the needs of modern shipping safety.
With technological development, automated visibility monitoring equipment has gradually replaced manual observation. These devices can measure waterway visibility conditions in real-time, continuously, and accurately, providing decision-making basis for maritime management departments and ensuring timely adoption of early warning, speed limitation, or navigation prohibition measures under low visibility conditions.
Features and Applications of Small Visibility Detectors
Small visibility detectors are portable meteorological monitoring devices developed for modern waterway monitoring needs. These instruments adopt the forward scatter detection principle, emitting infrared light pulses and measuring the light intensity scattered forward by aerosol particles in the air. Combined with specialized algorithms, they calculate the meteorological optical range to determine the visibility value.
Compared with the forward scatter principle, backward scatter technology has a larger sampling volume but poorer measurement accuracy. Therefore, forward scatter visibility meters are more widely used in waterway monitoring.
Small visibility detectors are lightweight and portable, typically weighing around a few kilograms with a compact main unit size, convenient for field inspections and temporary monitoring. The equipment integrates rechargeable lithium batteries, supporting continuous operation for multiple hours to meet all-weather outdoor detection needs.
