This lightning monitoring and early warning system is a fully digital platform for electric field detection and warning. It utilizes MEMS charge-sensing probes and employs an optimized differential electric field algorithm to minimize false alarms caused by rain, snow, or airborne dust. Supporting remote cloud monitoring and three-level audible-visual alarms, the system is designed for short-term lightning warnings at facilities such as oil depots and petrochemical plants.

The system is a fully digital platform for electric field detection and lightning warning. Its core detection mechanism is based on the principle of charge induction and developed using MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology; it eliminates internal moving parts prone to wear—such as motors—resulting in a compact footprint, low power consumption, and enhanced long-term reliability, while facilitating integration with other on-site safety equipment. By employing a lightning warning algorithm that combines differential electric field analysis with optimized thresholding, the system reduces false alarms caused by environmental factors like rain, strong winds, snow, and dust, thereby improving the accuracy of lightning warnings.

The complete system comprises a lightning warning probe, a data processing unit, a solar power supply system, surge protection, a grounding system, temperature/humidity/pressure sensors, a three-level audible-visual alarm, and a cloud-based data display and query module. The sensors are mounted on outdoor poles and support data transmission via RS485-Modbus-RTU and JSON protocols. Monitoring data is pushed externally via 4G networks every 60 seconds—requiring only 100MB of data traffic per month—making deployment and networking straightforward. Operators can connect the warning probe to a cloud server to remotely monitor the lightning status of the tank farm. The system continuously collects atmospheric electric field data, analyzes changes in the electrostatic field strength and polarity of thunderclouds to determine thunderstorm development trends, and triggers the audible-visual alarm to issue three-level warning signals, promptly notifying on-site personnel to suspend high-risk operations. The system features a sensor with a measurement range of -100 kV/m to 100 kV/m and a detection radius of up to 15 kilometers. Weighing 710 grams, the sensor is paired with a controller designed for a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 80°C, enabling reliable performance amidst the complex weather conditions found in outdoor tank farms. The equipment is suitable for a variety of settings—including petroleum and petrochemical depots, mining sites, power grids, aerospace and defense facilities, and scenic areas—where it provides localized, short-term lightning warnings and atmospheric electric field monitoring. In environments with flammable or explosive hazards, such as oil storage tank farms, the system serves as an active lightning safety monitoring solution; it detects approaching thunderstorms in advance to allow time for emergency response, addresses the limitations of traditional passive lightning rod protection, and enhances overall lightning safety management for the site.
