An atmospheric electric field meter is a remote sensing device for lightning detection that monitors lightning activity in real-time by measuring changes in the strength of the atmospheric electrostatic field. It can issue warnings 5 to 30 minutes prior to a lightning strike, providing a basis for protective measures in fields such as meteorological forecasting, power grid safety, petrochemicals, aerospace, and forest fire prevention.
The atmospheric electric field meter is a high-precision instrument for lightning monitoring and early warning, designed to track lightning activity by measuring fluctuations in the atmospheric electrostatic field. The device operates based on the principle of electrostatic induction: when a conductor is placed within an electrostatic field, induced charges are generated on its surface; the magnitude of these induced charges bears a linear relationship to the external electric field. Currently, the widely used field-mill type electric field meter consists of a stationary plate and a rotating plate. The rotation of the moving plate causes the induced charges on the stationary plate to undergo periodic fluctuations, allowing the electric field strength to be calculated by measuring the resulting current. Thunderstorm activity induces changes in the ground-level electric field, making the atmospheric electric field a critical parameter throughout every stage of a lightning event's lifecycle. By measuring variations in the ground-level atmospheric electric field, it is possible to infer the conditions of the electric fields within high-altitude clouds, thereby enabling forecasts regarding the risk of lightning strikes.
The core function of an atmospheric electric field meter is to provide continuous, uninterrupted monitoring of lightning activity within a specific region, supplying vital data for weather forecasting and meteorological disaster warnings. During the formation of a thunderstorm, charge separation within the clouds causes changes in the ground-level electric field; the atmospheric electric field meter detects these changes to analyze the rate of charge accumulation. This enables the device to issue lightning warning signals 5 to 30 minutes before a strike occurs, alerting outdoor personnel to immediately cease operations and seek shelter in a safe zone to avoid lightning hazards. Lightning warning systems integrate and analyze both lightning location data and atmospheric electric field data to issue alerts just prior to an impending lightning strike, prompting users to implement appropriate response measures.
Atmospheric electric field meters are applied across a wide range of high-risk industries and public safety sectors. The AEFI electric field monitoring and warning system supports various services, including routine meteorological forecasting, early warning for lightning-induced forest fires, aerospace operational support, and power grid safety management. In the petrochemical sector, atmospheric electric field meters are deployed at facilities such as oil and gas depots and refineries to facilitate the timely closure of valves and the activation of explosion-proof safety systems. In the realm of forest fire prevention, electric field meters can be deployed along forest perimeters to monitor lightning activity in real time, thereby providing early warnings regarding the risk of lightning-induced fires. Furthermore, atmospheric electric field meters can provide short-term thunderstorm monitoring and forecasting for critical locations such as construction sites, factories, oil depots, tourist attractions, stadiums, entertainment venues, and mining areas. In a practical application at the primary station of the Guangzhou Petrochemical Crude Oil Terminal, the lightning warning system successfully delivered detailed lightning alerts with a lead time of 30 minutes. The atmospheric electric field meter features a measurement range of ±200 kV/m and an accuracy of ±5%, enabling it to capture even minute fluctuations in the electric field. By continuously monitoring ground-level electrostatic field values and their rates of change, the system can also issue warnings regarding overhead lightning and determine when the risk of a lightning strike has subsided, thereby effectively mitigating the safety hazards associated with lightning-related damage.
